From the Notre-Dame Fire to My PhD: When Events Shape a Path

The fire that struck the Notre-Dame Cathedral on April 15, 2019, revealed significant gaps in our understanding of how historic masonry structures respond to extreme thermal events. In its aftermath, the scientific community mobilized extensively to address these challenges, developing more accurate numerical models to assess fire-induced structural damage.

This momentum led to the creation of the ANR DEMMEFI project, within which my PhD was carried out. This opportunity allowed me to deepen my expertise by combining advanced numerical modeling with complex experimental testing, all directed toward a meaningful objective: improving our understanding of the impact of fire on the structural behavior of historic masonry monuments.

Through my research, I have slightly and indirectly contributed to the restoration efforts of Notre-Dame Cathedral. I hope that this work will continue to support future preservation strategies and strengthen the resilience of cultural heritage structures facing similar events.

De l’incendie de Notre-Dame à mon doctorat : quand les événements façonnent un parcours

L’incendie qui a frappé la cathédrale Notre-Dame le 15 avril 2019 a révélé d’importantes lacunes dans notre compréhension du comportement des structures en maçonnerie historiques soumises à des sollicitations thermiques extrêmes. À la suite de cet événement, la communauté scientifique s’est fortement mobilisée afin de relever ces défis, en développant des modèles numériques plus précis pour évaluer les dommages structurels induits par le feu.

Cette dynamique a conduit à la création du projet ANR DEMMEFI, dans le cadre duquel j’ai réalisé mon doctorat. Cette opportunité m’a permis d’approfondir mes compétences en combinant modélisation numérique avancée et essais expérimentaux complexes, le tout au service d’un objectif porteur de sens : améliorer la compréhension de l’impact du feu sur le comportement structurel des monuments historiques en maçonnerie.

À travers mes travaux, j’ai contribué, de manière modeste et indirecte, aux efforts de restauration de la cathédrale Notre-Dame. J’espère que ces recherches continueront à soutenir les stratégies de préservation futures et à renforcer la résilience des structures du patrimoine culturel face à des événements similaires.
